About the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help

On Oct. 9, 1859, Adele Brise, a young Belgian woman said the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to her at Champion in Brown County, northeast of Green Bay. She said Mary asked her to teach religion to children. She was 28 years old at the time and from that time on she devoted the rest of her life to teaching children. At first she traveled by foot from house to house, and later she began a small school. Some other women joined her in this work, forming a community according to the rule of the Third Order Franciscans.

The Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help stands humbly, yet majestically, in a quiet and beautiful spot of rural Northeast Wisconsin just 16.3 miles from the Clarion Hotel in Green Bay. Our Lady of Good Help Shrine's Chapel was the first house of worship in the Belgian settlement and it all began when Adele Brise's father erected a 10-foot-by-12-foot oratory near the spot of Adele's vision of Our Blessed Mother. A small picture of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, given to Adele by Father William Verhoef, was the only adornment of this makeshift chapel.

In 2009, the most Reverend David L. Ricken, Bishop of Green Bay, opened a formal Church investigation into the Marian apparitions that occurred in 1859 on the site of the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. Based on the findings of the commission, on Wednesday, December 8, 2010, the feast day of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Ricken gave official Church approval of the Marian apparitions that occurred in the month of October at Robinsonville, now known as Champion, Wisconsin.

This declaration makes the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help at Champion the first and only Marian shrine in the United States that is on the site of an approved apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
